The Bay of Islands Swordfish Club (BOISC) is one of New Zealand’s most iconic game fishing clubs, with a proud history stretching back over a century. Based in both Russell and Paihia, the club remains at the heart of the Bay of Islands fishing scene, welcoming members, visitors, and international anglers alike.
Historic Roots
Founded in the early 20th century, the BOISC has played a central role in shaping the region’s reputation as a world-class destination for big game fishing. Over the years, it has hosted international tournaments and seen many record-breaking catches brought to its weigh stations.
Bars & Bistros
Both the Russell and Paihia clubrooms feature a bar and bistro, open Tuesday to Saturday from 4pm until close. These welcoming spaces are perfect for members and guests to share stories from the water, enjoy a drink, and relax with classic Kiwi hospitality.
Tournaments & Events
The club calendar is packed with fishing tournaments throughout the year, from junior events to the famous Marlin Classic. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or just starting out, the BOISC offers opportunities to get involved, test your skills, and be part of the community spirit that defines the Bay of Islands.
New Developments
The BOISC is currently developing new club facilities at Port Opua, within the Bay of Islands Marina. Expected to open in late 2025, this hub will provide modern amenities, a restaurant and bar, and even closer ties to the boating and fishing community. It will also serve as a welcoming destination for yachties arriving from the Pacific.
