Sitting right on the waterfront in historic Russell, The Duke of Marlborough is a hotel, restaurant and event venue with deep roots in New Zealand’s colonial era. It combines accommodation, dining, and function facilities under one roof, in a location that commands views over the Bay of Islands.
History & Character
The Duke began life in 1827 (with a legal licence granted in 1840), making it one of the earliest licensed establishments in New Zealand. Over time the property has been rebuilt, renovated and expanded; since 2010, current owners have invested in restoration and additional rooms. The hotel now offers 38 rooms, with a mix of waterfront, superior and classic-style rooms, many with balconies or views overlooking the bay.
Accommodation & Facilities
Guests can choose from a variety of room types, ranging from waterfront rooms opening to balconies, to premium or superior rooms overlooking the village. The property includes amenities such as a gym (for hotel guests) and access to tennis courts nearby. The hotel’s location provides direct access to water views, sunsets, and ease of walking to local attractions and the village centre.
Restaurant & Dining
The Duke’s restaurant is a focal point. It is open every day from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm, serving lunch and dinner. The menu emphasizes locally sourced, seasonal produce and offers a reinterpretation of classic dishes rather than adhering strictly to one style. Seafood features strongly—oysters from local waters, market fish and coastal shellfish are regularly found on the menu. Meat options also appear, for instance grass-fed eye fillet or slow-roasted lamb shoulder. The menu covers small and large dishes, shareable options, and plates for vegetarians or special dietary needs.
Sample menu items include fresh oysters (served various ways), seafood chowder, local fish and chips, risottos, cured salmon, and meat dishes such as duck and steak. There is a wine list of over 100 wines and some 30 beers to accompany meals.
Functions, Events & Private Dining
The Duke offers a range of event spaces: a garden bar, two dining rooms, The Deck (overlooking the bay), the Ballroom, and the Duchess Room for private events. Their on-site event coordinators assist with weddings, corporate functions, and group bookings. For large restaurant bookings, their policy includes requiring credit card details to secure bookings of 7–14 people, and a no-show charge may apply.
Dining Reservation Policy
Reservations are recommended given the popularity, especially over summer and busy periods. For groups of 15 or more, direct contact is requested. A $50 per person no-show fee may apply if booking changes are not advised.
Appeal & Experience
For visitors and locals, The Duke offers more than just a place to stay or eat: it is a destination with historical gravitas, waterfront positioning, and food that ties to the region’s produce and seafood wealth. Its blending of heritage character, atmospheric dining, and capacity for events makes it a choice location for travellers seeking something beyond the usual hotel stay in the Bay of Islands.

1 Review on “Duke of Marlborough”
Kiwi Gorgon
You can’t beat a meal in the shade, at the Duke, with a cold beer on a warm day. The last time I was here, it was traditional fish and chips!
