The Landing is a single-estate vineyard, winery, food & stay experience set on the Purerua Peninsula in the Bay of Islands, Northland. Since planting the first Syrah and Chardonnay vines in 2007, the estate has been building a reputation for estate-grown wines, mindful winemaking, food inspired by land and sea, luxury residences, and a commitment to sustainability.
Vineyard, Terroir & Wine Production
- Size & Location: The vineyard spans around 33 gently sloped acres overlooking Rangihoua Bay, surrounded by farmland, native bush, and wetlands.
- Soils & Climate: The vines are rooted in clay and sandstone soils, benefitting from a coastal climate: long warm summers, sea-breezes that help keep things dry, and a sheltered aspect given by surrounding hills. These conditions encourage deep root growth and expressive wines.
- Varieties & Wines: After beginning with Syrah and Chardonnay in 2007, additional varieties have been planted including Sangiovese, Pinot Gris, Montepulciano, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. They produce Chardonnay, Syrah, Pinot Gris, Rosé, Port, and several red blends.
- Wine Collections: There are three tiers:
- Boathouse – for easy-drinking, informal occasions.
- The Landing – signature wines reflecting the estate terroir.
- Madre – top-tier wines made only in exceptional vintages, using grapes from their oldest vines.
- Winery & Cellar Door: Their on-site winery opened in 2019–2020, enabling wine-making from seed to barrel to bottle at The Landing. The tasting room / cellar door is available by appointment for small groups.
Food, Hospitality & Residences
- Dining experiences: Visitors at the cellar door can enjoy wine tasting paired with lunch, platters, or grazing boards, taking in views of vineyard, bush, coastline. The food is inspired by local produce and the natural environment.
- Luxury stays: The property includes four architect-designed guest residences, each nestled in the landscape to blend comfort and seclusion. Ideal for those staying overnight or longer to enjoy wine, nature, and rest.
Sustainability, Culture & Standout Features
- Sustainability credentials: The Landing is certified by Toitū CarbonZero, meaning its operations emit net zero greenhouse gas emissions. It is also certified under Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. Practices include dry-farming (no irrigation), regenerating native forest, biodiversity protection, waste management, and local sourcing.
- Natural & cultural environment: The property encompasses restored wetlands and native bush, with one of the densest kiwi populations in the country. There are also archaeological and cultural sites, and opportunities for guests to engage with heritage and the landscape.
- Architecture & design: The winery building was designed by Cheshire Architects, designed to be graceful, simple, making use of natural ventilation and sun, and reflecting traditional Māori architectural elements (such as a welcoming porch and peaked roof).
Visit The Landing: What to Expect
