Your Gateway to Urupukapuka Island
If you’re planning to visit Urupukapuka Island during your time in the Bay of Islands, the Explore Group’s Otehei Bay Ferry is the way to get there. Running multiple departures throughout the day from Paihia, this reliable ferry service connects you directly to the largest and most accessible island in the bay, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace without being locked into a fixed itinerary.
What Makes It Special
What sets the Otehei Bay Ferry apart is flexibility. Unlike cruise tours that dictate your schedule, you catch a ferry over in the morning (or whenever suits you), spend as much or as little time as you want on the island, then hop on a later ferry back. No pressure, no rigid timing, just straightforward transport that lets you do your own thing.
Urupukapuka Island is genuinely worth visiting. The Department of Conservation manages this pest-free sanctuary, and you can see the difference. Clean beaches, clear water for swimming and snorkeling, and walking tracks that range from easy coastal strolls to more challenging ridge walks with views across the bay. Otehei Bay Café sits right on the waterfront and does decent food and cold drinks. You can hire kayaks and paddleboards there too if you fancy getting out on the water.
Who Is It Good For?
Families with young children like being able to choose their own return time without being rushed. People who just want a beach day can find a quiet spot and settle in. If you’re into walking, the island’s trails are there to explore without watching the clock. Even passengers from the morning Discover the Bay cruise sometimes extend their stay and catch a later ferry back, so clearly those extra hours on the island are worth having.
The ferry runs year-round, so whether you’re visiting in the height of summer or during the quieter winter months, you can plan an island day trip. The vessels are modern and comfortable, with onboard facilities and crew who know the area well and can answer questions about what to see and do once you arrive.

Practical Information
Season: Year-round service with multiple daily departures. Peak season (December to February) and school holidays are busiest, so booking ahead is recommended.
Getting there: Ferries depart from the Maritime Building at Paihia Wharf, 69 Marsden Road. If you’re staying in Paihia, it’s an easy walk to the wharf. Parking is available nearby if you’re driving in.
What to bring: Sunscreen, hat, swimwear, towel, walking shoes if you plan to explore the tracks, water bottle, snacks or picnic lunch (or plan to eat at the café), camera, and a light jacket. Northland weather can change, so layers are a good idea.
On the island: Otehei Bay has a café with food and drinks, restroom facilities, and equipment hire for kayaks and paddleboards. Multiple beaches are within walking distance, and the walking track network is well signposted. The main Urupukapuka Loop Track takes about 2 hours return and offers stunning views.
Flexibility tip: You don’t need to commit to a specific return ferry when you book. Just catch whichever departure suits you on the day. If you’re on the Discover the Bay morning cruise, you can extend your island stay and return on a later ferry at no extra cost (arrange this with the Explore Group reservations team).
Nearby: Combine your island visit with other Bay of Islands activities. Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Russell’s historic waterfront, and numerous other tours operate from Paihia. The ferry terminal is right in the heart of town, so you can easily walk to cafés, shops, and other attractions before or after your trip.
