A proper sailing experience on a classic yacht
If you want to see the Bay of Islands properly, getting out on the water is the only way to do it. Vigilant is a 42ft classic cutter rig yacht built from native New Zealand timber, and this full-day shared charter is one of the most personal options available in the bay. Skipper Nat keeps group sizes small deliberately, so you are not sharing the experience with a boatload of strangers the way you would on one of the larger tour vessels. It is a genuinely different pace.
What the day looks like
Departures are from Russell Wharf daily at 10am, returning at 3:30pm. The morning begins with a relaxed sail as Nat reads the conditions and picks an island from the Bay’s 144 to stop at. This is where the day opens up. You can kayak around the coastline, snorkel in clear water, walk the beach, or stay on deck and watch the islands drift past. Kayaks and snorkelling gear are both on board and included. There is no pressure to fill the time in any particular way.
Food, wildlife, and what is included
Lunch is served on deck from fresh vegetables grown in the crew’s own garden. It is simple, good food, and dietary requirements are catered for if you let them know in advance. Tea, coffee, and fresh fruit are available throughout the day. Dolphins, penguins, friendly sharks, and seabirds are regularly spotted along the way, so it is worth having a camera somewhere accessible rather than buried in a bag.
Why Vigilant stands out
What sets Vigilant apart from the bigger operators is how much of a personal experience it actually is. Nat lives in Russell and knows the bay well, and the small group format means you get a skipper who is genuinely engaged with your day rather than running through a script. The yacht itself is beautiful in a way that modern charter boats simply are not.
Getting there and what to know
If you are staying in Paihia rather than Russell, factor in the passenger ferry crossing before your 10am departure. The crossing takes around 15 minutes and ferries run regularly from Paihia Wharf. It is an easy addition to the morning and worth planning for rather than rushing. If you are based in Russell, the wharf is straightforward to find in the centre of town.
Departures run in most conditions, but the charter will not go out if the weather poses a safety concern. A full refund is given in that case. Bring sunscreen, a hat, togs, and a light layer for the sail back. The boat is well set up and Nat will walk you through everything when you arrive.
