The Plough & Feather is as an English-style gastro pub with a distinct Northland influence, combining a relaxed pub atmosphere with a curated food and drink offering. It aims to showcase the history, culture, land and people of the area through its cuisine, beverages and character.
Food & Dining Experience
The menu embraces gastro-pub fare delivered with thoughtful sourcing and culinary skill. Executive Chef Colin Ashton leads the kitchen: he originally trained in the UK and has worked in several countries including Wales, England, the Cayman Islands and Australia, before settling in Northland. He has held roles such as Head Chef at Kerikeri’s Food at Wharepuke and has run a catering business, Soda Creek Kitchen. The team emphasises fresh, quality ingredients, striving to use sustainable, spray-free, organic and local produce where possible. The goal is to deliver food that complements their beer and wine offerings, reflecting the region without undue complexity.
Beer, Wine & Beverage Offerings
The Tap Room displays as many as twenty locally brewed ales and lagers from its sister company, Kainui Brew Co, along with occasional guest taps. Kainui Brew Co was founded in 2015 in Kerikeri and has become an integral part of the local brewing community. The wine selection includes award-winning local wines from their sister vineyard, Kainui Road Vineyard, which is family run and sustainable. Varieties offered include Syrah, Tempranillo, Rosé, Viognier, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc, plus an international wine list to complement the regional focus.
Heritage & Place
The Plough & Feather is situated on historically significant land, in proximity to the Kerikeri Mission Station – a site dating back to 1819 which holds a key place in early settlement history. The pub acknowledges its location’s heritage and seeks to weave that story into its identity and offerings. Live music is presented regularly; for instance, on Friday evenings from 5pm to 8pm local acts perform, inviting locals and visitors to linger in social ambiance.
