Getting around the Bay of Islands by taxi offers flexibility and convenience for airport runs, local trips, and exploring the region. Several reliable services operate across the area, from quick rides into town to long-distance transfers and custom tours.

For water-based transport between Paihia and Russell, or vehicle crossings at Opua, see our guide to Bay of Islands Ferries.

Local Taxi & Shuttle Services

Paihia and Russell Taxis

Bay Cabs runs a 24/7 service from Paihia with metered fares. Their fleet includes four and six-seater cars plus two nine-seater vans, making them a good option for larger groups. They accept cash and card (with in-vehicle EFTPOS) and can provide child seats on request. Standard hours run until 9pm Sunday through Thursday, extending to 10:15pm on weekends, with late-night and early-morning service available by arrangement.

If you’re staying in Russell, note that taxis typically meet you at the Opua or Okiato ferry terminals rather than crossing to Russell itself, so factor in the ferry time when planning your pickup.

ABC Shuttles offers door-to-door service throughout the Bay of Islands with fixed-rate pricing arranged when you book. They run airport transfers from Kerikeri Airport to Paihia and other destinations, and handle resort transfers, cruise ship pickups, and private hire. Their modern fleet includes vans and MPVs, with group discounts available for larger bookings.

Dial A Ride brings over 25 years of Bay of Islands experience to the table. Andy and Jane specialise in personalised service, from straightforward taxi runs to custom tours around the region. They’re particularly good for vineyard tours and marina transfers to spots like Opua. There’s a $20 minimum fare, and trips after 10pm need advance booking.

Paihia Taxis & Tours operates a mini-bus service for groups of 4 to 10 people, covering the entire Northland region from Paihia and Kerikeri through to Kawakawa and Kaitaia. They handle cruise ship pickups, airport shuttles, and can arrange tours to Cape Reinga and other Northland attractions.

Kerikeri Taxis

Kerikeri Taxis is a local operation with an Audi Q7 and an 11-seater Mercedes van, useful for groups or families travelling together. They work on fixed-rate pricing arranged when you book, so you know the cost upfront. The service covers Kerikeri, the wider Bay of Islands, and Far North, including airport transfers, marina pickups (Opua, Paihia, Whangaroa, Mangonui), and healthcare appointments. They don’t service 6am flights, so plan accordingly if you have an early departure.

ABC Shuttles also services Kerikeri Airport transfers from Kerikeri town, with door-to-door pickup throughout the area.

Airport Transfers

The main taxi services cover Kerikeri Airport (about 15 minutes from town), with most also offering transfers to Whangarei Airport (90 minutes) and Auckland International Airport (3 to 3.5 hours). Longer trips need advance booking.

For Kerikeri Airport, book ahead for early-morning flights. Check-in closes 30 minutes before domestic departures and one hour before international connections.

Tours and Custom Trips

Several Bay of Islands taxi operators double as tour guides, offering half-day or full-day trips tailored to your interests. Popular options include winery tours, scenic drives to Cape Reinga, and custom itineraries around Northland’s historic sites and natural attractions.

Tours typically accommodate 4 to 10 people depending on the vehicle, with experienced local drivers providing commentary on the area’s history and hidden spots. It’s a practical option if you want to explore without navigating unfamiliar roads or worrying about designated drivers on wine tours.

Water Taxi Services

Bay of Islands Water Taxi offers a different way to get around, with water-based transport to islands and remote locations throughout the Bay. They specialise in Cape Brett walking track transfers, dropping hikers at the trailhead and collecting them from Deepwater Cove. During summer, they run island shuttles to Roberton Island, Moturua Island, and Urupukapuka Island for walking, swimming, snorkeling, and camping.

The service has skippers who share local knowledge and history of the area. It’s useful for reaching beaches and tracks that aren’t accessible by road, with capacity for groups up to 20 passengers. Book ahead, particularly for Cape Brett transfers or during busy periods.

Booking A Taxi

Most operators accept cash and card payments (EFTPOS available in vehicles). For quick local trips, you can usually arrange a pickup with minimal notice, though advance booking is recommended during summer, late at night, or early in the morning.

Airport transfers, tours, and longer trips need advance booking to ensure the right vehicle is available and pickup times align with your schedule. If you’re travelling with a large group, significant luggage, or need child seats, mention this when booking.

During peak summer or major events, availability can be tight. Book ahead if you’re catching a ferry or flight, or have dinner reservations to keep.

For long-distance trips like Auckland Airport or Cape Reinga tours, ask for a quote when booking. Fixed-rate pricing is common for these journeys.

Whether you need a quick ride across town, an airport transfer, or a full-day tour of Northland, the Bay of Islands has reliable taxi services with local operators who know the region well.
